Short Course Agenda:
This entry level course leads delegates chronologically through the typical phases of a marine oil spill response arising from a shipping casualty. Using on a fictitious scenario, the presenters will employ role-play and mixed presentation media to guide delegates through the phases of the response, including:
- Spill Assessment – simple tools to enable the identification of the appropriate level of response
- Notification - processes by which to inform internally and externally the appropriate authorities
- Mobilisation – Initiating the physical response effort and resources in a structured manner
- International response – Integration of global resources to complement local / regional effort
- Clean-up techniques – Overview of the key strategic responses, opportunities and limitations
- Environmental considerations – considering the consequences of different response decisions
- Media communications – The news agenda and what the response team can expect
An overriding theme throughout the course will be the importance of having an effective oil spill contingency plan underpinning the response effort, but recognising the need for flexibility in the plan to adapt, in every case, to a unique set of circumstances.
